Alteration to existing property
The name, Kinning Park Complex, refers to both an organisation and to a place. We have been working with KPC since 2017 to find a way to make sure their building is functional, flexible and accessible for generations to come. The red sandstone Govan Parish Board primary school - built in 1916 - was used as a community centre from 1976. It has been in community hands since 1997 after the local authority closed the centre and local residents occupied the building for 55 days and nights in protest at the removal of an important community asset. We began our process by speaking to the people the building currently supports - tenants, local people, and the team who run the space. These conversations created a clear brief for us to answer. The most pressing concern was funding and our design study supported a number of grant funding applications. KPC have been successful and received over £1.5million of funding from The Big Lottery and the Scottish Government's Regeneration Capital Grant Fund. Our approach to the building is one of adaptive re-use. Making the most of the building’s heritage and existing structure to create functional, flexible and accessible community and creative workspace across all three storeys. We are currently working through detailed and technical design in collaboration with Armour Construction Consultants, David Narro Associates, Atelier Ten and Max Fordham LLP. Kinning Park Complex will be on-site by the end of 2019 and plans to re-open its doors to the community in 2020.
