Bringing together the Institute of Food Research, the University of East Anglia and the gastrointestinal endoscopy facility of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the Quadram Institute conducts bench-to-bedside research and clinical care related to health and diet. The new facility houses nearly 300 researchers in addition to clinicians, support staff and up to 40,000 endoscopy outpatients each year. Within a hierarchy of spaces, the clinical research facility and patient treatment areas are more private to protect patients’ and participants’ confidentiality, whilst the research space is open to showcase the science within. The building provides distinct areas to each department, as well as the shared office space, meeting rooms and amenities fundamental to creating a truly translational facility. The building, with its linear shape and striking, louvred façade, is a landmark building on the Norwich Research Park. Large glazed openings provide excellent visual connectivity from office desk to laboratory bench, and between floors across the atrium lightwell.
