The QM Bio Innovation Centre is a unique facility dedicated to incubating science entrepreneurs and promoting knowledge transfer. Originally designed by NBBJ and opened in 2010, the QM Bio Innovation Centre includes leasable laboratory and office floors sitting above teaching and administrative space for Queen Mary University of London. Commercial and academic uses are accessed through separate dedicated entrances whilst sharing amenities such as a cafe, meeting suite and lecture theatre. A decade after the building opened, NBBJ returned to design the first UK genomics laboratory for the BGI Group. The fit-out required precise flows from one laboratory space to the next and the interior layout has been developed to accommodate BGI’s specific workflow. The project was cost effective and undertaken within a tight budget. The design responds to this by controlling the material palette and is based upon three key interior concepts: life science, industrial materials and greenery for its biophilic benefits.
