Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
The involved the complete refurbishment of a generously proportioned apartment situated on the fourth floor of a large Grade II Listed mansion block. The block was built in 1928 and forms part of the Howard de Walden Estate. The un-modernised apartment lacked even the most basic services and had a very small kitchen. The steel and concrete frame of the building made installation of new services almost impossible. Working closely with the council’s conservation officer and freeholder we able take up areas of the floor screed and install services and additional sound insulation without generally raising floor levels. The kitchen/dinning room was relocated into the library which connected to the reception room via large sliding doors, giving the owners the opportunity to have one large family space when required. Other challenges included; reinforcing floors and installing a 400kg antique bath, retaining all original joinery and plaster work, thermally and acoustically upgrade all the original windows, restoring an original marble bathroom and its bathtub and negotiating/mediating with the building, its residents and the Howard de Walden Estate.
