Set in the heart of South Manchester, this beautifully designed private home was reimagined through a series of carefully considered front and rear extensions, creating a residence that balances traditional vernacular character with contemporary family living. The project comprises a combination of two-storey and single-storey extensions alongside extensive internal alterations, allowing the home to evolve organically around the needs of a growing young family. The design philosophy draws heavily on the established architectural language of the MSA region, celebrating traditional proportions and craftsmanship while integrating modern detailing and spatial innovation. Natural materials form the backbone of the scheme, reinforcing a sense of permanence and authenticity while ensuring the new interventions sit comfortably within their context. These materials are paired with clean, contemporary lines and open-plan living spaces, resulting in a home that feels both timeless and forward-looking. At the heart of the interior, a bespoke staircase acts as a sculptural focal point, seamlessly connecting the extended spaces and enhancing the flow of the home. Complementing this is a striking internal saltwater shark tankāan extraordinary design feature that brings drama, movement, and a unique sense of theatre into everyday family life. This distinctive element gained national recognition and was featured in Grand Designs. The completed home successfully merges lifestyle, space, and design, creating a flexible environment that supports family life today while remaining adaptable for the future. The project stands as a thoughtful example of how traditional vernacular architecture can be reinterpreted through a contemporary lens to deliver a truly bespoke living experience.
