Conversion of a mid 19th century stone built barn into a residence and studio. The design affirms the character of the barn, whilst creating a contemporary residence and workspace. The key interventions were to bring in lots of natural light and the insertion of a heated concrete slab on the ground floor. The concrete extends outside and adorns the building like pieces of jewelery. The north and south arches have been glazed and can open fully to enjoy the original freedom of the plan. There is a strong emphasis on materiality in the project and the additions of the polished concrete and glass play off the backdrop of the hand hewn stone and thick oak structure. The materials provide a tactile enjoyment of the building in it's day to day habitation. The new angle for the staircase breaks the strong rectangular order and adds a new dynamic to the main space.
