Extension to historic farmhouse Pen y Banc that had once belonged to the Queen's physician, set at the head of the Nant Sarn Valley. Winner of Powys LABC Extension Award 2018. The extension is built on the site of the original cottage, the farmhouse a later addition. The floor plan is a 'T' shape, with the new wing facing head towards the views of the valley. The design has two aims: to add a practical new front entrance at the rear of the property and to capture the valley views from the new open plan kitchen and dining room, providing a sense of connection to the property's unique and striking location. The rear timber clad structure houses utilitarian spaces; housing plant for renewable energy, dry room & wet room, to cater support the Client's love of outdoor pursuits. The principal space is double height, with frameless glass doors opening onto a slate terrace from the kitchen and dining area, with natural light from long slot rooflights. These is a mezzanine bedroom and bathroom, at the rear.
