The project, in Jellicoe Gardens, Cardiff includes 2 ground floor extensions to the rear and side of a semi detached period house. The Client wanted more light and more connection to the garden with a new open plan kitchen, living & dining room. With neighbours on both sides we designed high level feature windows that let light in but prevented overlooking. From a dark and low pitched kitchen, and irregular living space, the rear extension has provided cohesion and openness. We did studies to design the rear facade, and the introduction of the timber cladding to the ground floor connects the building with the garden. The side extension houses a new Ground floor WC with concealed laundry area, as well as designed bin storage area which improves functionality. These are important elements in residential design, designed with Inclusive design in mind.
