A pre-fabricated timber framed home located on a sloping site overlooking the Teign estuary in Shaldon, Devon. Our clients bought a site which already had foundations constructed for a scheme which had been aborted by a previous owner. Our design sought to re-use these foundations where possible, extending them only where necessary to suit a new, exciting design. The house is laid out around an internal courtyard that features a reflection pool as its centrepiece. At ground floor, the surrounding walls of the house are built using dry-stacked cast stone with very few windows except a fully glazed entrance hallway that sits within the reflection pool and is access via a decked walkway. The glazed entrance area contains nothing except a suspended corten coloured staircase that hangs from the floor above; this open plan area leads through to a living room, kitchen and dining area as well as a Guest suite and a snug which all look out over a wildflower meadow landscape. The first floor sits perpendicular to the ground floor, and is clad in textured white fibre cement panels whose rhythm contrasts that of the cast stone cladding to the courtyard below. The first floor cantilevers out over the reflection pool, and is supported by a single Y column, painted yellow. The first floor contains a master suite with views over the Teign Estuary, as well as two further bedrooms and a bathroom.
