Santa Anna School in Bevagna Location: Bevagna, Umbria (Italy) Facility: School, Library, Sports Hall, Size: 4,500 sqm The design of the school is inspired by the characteristics fo the Umbrian towns. A series of pavilion like buildings are organized around a central piazza creating a complex that not only functions as an educational facility but also as a community centre for the citizens. The project includes five pavilions: the nursery, the primary school, the secondary school, the sports centre and the canteen/multipurpose room. Their arrangement integrates the educational activity with a number of other activities for the community, where students, parents and citizens find a place to meet. The project proposes a respectful intervention in the landscape through simple geometries, attention to proportions and the use of natural materials, such as wood, and precast soil panels supplied from the local industry achieving a net zero carbon solution. The use of modular off-site construction methods allow the building to be assembled on site within 6 months and the environmental strategies considering buildings orientations, photovoltaic panels, natural ventilation and a centralised energy plant permit the complex to function as a positive energy building.
