Greenwich
£1m to £1.99M
Mole designed two buildings in this exciting project at the heart of the new development on the Greenwich Peninsula, for developers Knight Dragon. Together the two buildings contribute to the vibrancy of the Design district, fulfilling the client’s brief to design a ’destination that will keep thinkers, makers and doers in the very place that brings their ideas to life’. The ‘Rhomboid’ building is clad in a pyramidal profiled cladding, with a two-tone colour that changes with the direction of the light. Fins surrounding the windows in dichroic glass refract coloured light over the facades. The colours of the dichroic rhomboid have been inspired by the those of a gas flame, recalling the history of the site as Europe’s largest gas works. C2 is The Corten ‘Ziggurat’ building which has an industrial quality that recalls the origins of the site as the largest producer of gas in Europe. The stepped sides and diagonal cladding are reminiscent of the Victorian gas holders which were originally on the site. On the west side are external shutters, and on the east side are fins that shield the upper floor windows from solar gain.
