The Memorial Hall is one of Bedford School’s most iconic buildings both architecturally and significantly: it was built to commemorate the boys who lost their lives in both world wars. It’s conversion into the School’s staff area has therefore been a sympathetic one, with the existing fabric carefully adapted and worked around to create a subtle design solution. To accommodate the new use of the building, two new kitchens have had to be introduced into the building. These have been concealed into corners on each floor, and concealed behind folding and hinged oak paneled doors, which when open give access to the required areas, and when closed blend in with the existing joinery detailing. All other additions have been detailed in a similar way. Worktops, pigeon holes and archive cabinets are all constructed from oak with profiles and mouldings tying them into the existing interior design of the building. The interior design and furniture have all been chosen to sit harmoniously within the environment, creating a relaxing and contemplative atmosphere. The timeless classical feel is also hardwearing and practical for a building which needs to continue to look good whilst getting a lot of use.
