Completed in 2004 the new pharmacy technical services unit provides a 950m2 purpose built facility for the Trust to manufacture its own Patient Nutrition feeds and Chemotherapy drugs. The unit had been designed to replace the existing facilities which do not now comply with the latest standards and quality control procedures required for a manufacturing pharmacy. Careful attention was paid to the client requirements during the design stage to ensure the Clean Room Envionment met the standards required by the MHRA. Due to the short shelf life of some of the products it is not viable for the Trust to purchase from the private sector and therefore an on site facility was needed. As the facility will be licenced the Trust will be able to manufacture for the private sector providing a source of additional revenue. The site chosen to the west of the hospital site was vacant land although having ease of access to the hospital road network and services. This includes a connection to the vacuum delivery system allowing products to be delivered direct to the patient.
