Photographer’s studio is a reinvented and repurposed space in a West London photography studio for a photographer and chef. We were approached to reimagine the ground floor part of a studio space, as the commissioning photographer and her team needed a better kitchen, more storage space for books, files, framed prints and photography equipment and space for occasional filming. The building has natural light only on one of four sides, so it was key to develop a solution that could amplify the effect of the available natural light, by means of reflection and transparency. The brief set out the requirement for more storage capacity, for a more practical storage space, for the storage to be accessible, user friendly and easy to get to. Alongside storage, the room was to accommodate a space to display large scale framed prints for visitors, clients and curators, and ample wall space to showcase permanent prints, a space to store books, a kitchen to be used for day to day needs and occasional filming, and an informal seating area. Easily accessible materials were used to create bespoke design solutions, fit for purpose, yet creative, playful and a little different: mirror, polycarbonate, bright paint and extensive research. The design includes a bespoke art hanging storage solution that allows for different format frames to be stored and displayed. Each rail is secured to the ceiling and the tracks can easily be pulled out enabling an easier way to manoeuvre and showcase large scale, heavy, framed artwork. By using translucent coloured polycarbonate sheets the design allows for light to flow deep into the plan. This cost effective and playful solution was chosen as an alternative to using clear toughened glass, enabling the storage area to have natural light throughout the day without impacting practicality.
