We were asked to design a staircase and ramp for pedestrians and cyclists. A lift was not in the brief but a 4m drop had to be accommodated. Our first consideration was that the required 84m of ramp would not discriminate against those using wheelchairs or pushchairs. At the same time, we sought to design a place people would want to spend time in, encourage wildlife and one worthy of Taunton’s Garden Town status. By a combination of using waste rubble from the old Cattle Market site and mechanically fixed modular components, the proposal would not only have a low carbon footprint, but be easy to dismantle, remove and recycle at the end of life. Embodying the principals of a circular economy.
