Alteration to existing property, Brownfield site, Listed Building - Grade II, New Build
A Community Land Trust wanted to exploit an underused, existing urban spaces for a car free scheme of one-bedroom flats for affordable rents. This is a heavily constrained urban site with trees, listed buildings, land contamination, restricted access, acoustic issues. As lead consultant we brought together a design team to address the issues (archaeological, arboricultural. ecological, structural, drainage and acoustics). The final proposal includes outdoor spaces to support community activities and help the wellbeing of residents (allotments, separate garden areas and courtyards), retains the historic ‘burgage plot’ form and an original air raid shelter, improves biodiversity and has a rooftop greenhouse for hydroponic plant cultivation.
