The rafters of an old, unused loft space, of a Cotswold school transformed into a library full of tunnels and nooks, slopes and expanses to share books in or cosily read quietly in. The design, opens up the roof space and provides views out across the landscape and lets plenty of natural light into the space, connecting the children to the outside world. The new space has the added benefit of allowing the school to maximise the space available to them and freed up rooms for alternative uses. Consulting the children and engaging them in both the design and building processes was an important positive element of this project. The children were able to work collaboratively with each other and the architects to develop ideas to be included in the scheme. A time capsule, a tunnel in the shelves and an ingenious light fitting incorporating books were all elements thought up by the children and brought to fruition in the final build.
