Built in 1855 and extended further in 1861 ‘The Cottage’ has had a varied and interesting history with past uses ranging from a row of fisherman’s cottages, an inn ‘the Freemasons Arms’ or known locally as the ‘Square and Compass’ (1862), a temperance Hotel (1895) and latterly a private residence. A substantial conservation, repair and modification construction project. Externally sensitive repair works involve repointing and selective replacement of the sandstone walling, recovering and thermal improvement of the orange pantile roof and appropriate ‘conservation’ repairs to door and window joinery. Internally interventions include the creation of a ‘nook’ off the principal living area, the sympathetic restoration of the Long Room with a new ceiling ‘cut-out’ and light lantern, the reconstruction of the Barrel Room into a garden room and the installation of a wood pellet burner into a former coal shed.
