Formed in 1968, formalised as a partnership in 1975 and restructured as a community interest company in 2010, Amber Film and Photography Collective is committed to a documentary engagement with communities in the North of England, in particular the lives and landscapes of working class and marginalised communities. It is committed to the exploration, celebration and sharing of the documentary photography and filmmaking from which it draws inspiration. The Collective’s material and work along with Side Gallery and Side Cinema is housed in a complex of historic buildings at Side, Newcastle upon Tyne. Two ranges of 18C warehouses are located either side of a medieval alleyway, Battery Stairs that leads from Side close to Sandhill all closely linked with Newcastle’s industrial maritime heritage and Quayside under the large shadow of the Tyne Bridge. The practice prepared a Conservation Management Plan in response to a commission from the Amber Film and Photography Collective in the context of their Access and Engagement Project that looks to develop and improve gallery and archive spaces at the site and to improve public access and conservation of the collection itself. The CMP will help in better understanding the heritage significance and value inherent in the following three closely interrelated subject strands relevant to the Collective’s location at Side, Newcastle upon Tyne.
