Metropolitan Workshop won an ideas competition in 2019 for an estate regeneration project near Liverpool University, the Ropewalks and Georgian Quarters. The Grove Place project will secure the long-term future of the existing communities and provide new multi-tenure housing in 6 new buildings with high quality streets and open spaces. Consultation with Resident Design Champions informed the design – particularly their support for retaining mature trees, the importance of communal and private gardens, and lower than normal parking numbers. The largest central plot between Vine Street and Grove Street is the widest and suits courtyard living. The tallest building contains podium parking beneath an open-sided private courtyard garden. To the south of this, shedkm have designed a lower courtyard block with private sale townhouses facing Falkner Street. The plot east of Grove Street by shedkm proposes two pairs of pavilions in a landscape of existing trees. The proposed redevelopment of the Grove Place estate creates a walkable neighbourhood, better connected to the surrounding context. Historic street patterns (closed in the 90s) will be reinstated with a new cycleway. A planning application for 305 new homes, and commercial space was submitted in March 2021.
