We acquired this 50sqm infill plot with a derelict garage and planning for a two storey office in 2003. As a former gap in the terrace the site was bounded on 3 sides by neighbouring land and buildings. The unconventional nature of its location in turn produced the design response which departed from its vernacular environment. The main entrance and corridor leading to a bathroom divides the 2 Bedrooms located at ground floor level. Stairs lead discretely to the highly glazed open plan living /dining /kitchen space which is slightly setback at 1st floor level. The full width sliding doors are fully openable onto a sheltered terrace giving views towards the street. Structural and thermal elements of the house are almost entirely made of wood based products giving this project strong ecological credentials. The cross laminated timber panels have also been utilised for bespoke built-in furniture and storage to blend seamlessly into the exposed wooden interior.
