New Build
MCW Architects , The Oast House , Malting Lane , CAMBRIDGE , Cambridgeshire , CB3 9HF
MCW is appointed within a 5-year framework agreement with University of Bedfordshire for projects across their Polhill and Park Square campuses. The Gateway building is a new 3-storey academic building, the centrepiece of a £25m redevelopment that has transformed the Polhill campus. The building provides a new public face for the campus, 3,750m2 of new teaching and learning facilities, consisting of lecture theatres, seminar rooms and classrooms, staff space, and informal learning areas. The ground floor of the building includes reception, exhibition and café facilities and is intended to act as the welcome space for visitors and new and potential students. Intensive dialogue was undertaken with the client estates team and the building users, to assess the greatest needs for the campus, as well as with the local authorities. The building and the associated infrastructure works were completed in November 2014, on time and on budget after a one-year construction period, achieving BREEAM ‘Excellent’. ‘As a University we really prioritise in investing in student facilities, and I think this is the best yet.’ Bill Rammell, Vice Chancellor, University of Bedfordshire.
