Between 1991 and 2011, we worked in partnership with Ryohin Keikaku in Japan and London on design and implementation of all Muji stores and concessions throughout the UK and Europe. A 20-year continuous association between a sole designer and retailer is rare, but was one which created projects of integrity, consistency and clarity. Over two decades, we completed more than 50 projects, both large scale and intimate. These successfully fused elements of materiality, layering our own spatial response to the host building, place and requirements. The Muji outlets we worked on in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Germany and Spain demonstrate where clear architectural composition can refine, enhance and communicate a unique Japanese brand to a European market. As well as creating the shopping environments we also designed and developed product and furniture for sale within the stores.
