Within a Conservation Area
This project called for the merging of two maisonettes and complete refurbishment of a Victorian terraced house within a conservation area to return the disparate flats into a coherent single family residence. We created a series of contemporary interventions to complement the period details of the original house. A particular challenge of the brief was to insert a passenger lift into the floor plan at three levels. The clients wished for comfort, light and richness along with restraint and rigour. The original entrance hall was reformed to provide flow of light and circulation and the house entirely remodelled to suit their requirements. The house provides an office for both the owners: a small study facing the substantial communal gardens at ground floor and a generous library at first floor where oak panelling and cantilevered Corian shelving create a rich, warm and contemporary interior.
