New Build, Listed Building - Grade II
The refurbishment and contemporary extension of a substantial Grade II * listed property was required to adapt the private residential wing of this large house for the new generation of ownership and to the evolving requirements of modern living. The planning process involved English Heritage and a number of historical societies, and after a year of submissions and negotiations listed building consent was granted for an extensive refurbishment to the residential wing and highly contemporary two-story extension was secured. The extension provides a double height entrance and ancillary spaces. Though very minimal in appearance, the design of the extension is contextual response to the site, where the main façade’s stone pier echoes buttresses across the courtyard. The Bathstone cladding was sourced from the same quarry as that used for the main house in the Victorian renovation. The internal double height space features a stair formed in white painted 10mm steel plate. The floor finish is Basalt natural stone throughout. The ceilings, internal faces of the stair and doors and linings are formed in solid oak to provide warmth and richness of material.
