Listed Building - Grade II*, New Build
Mason Gillibrand Architects , 16 Willow Mill , Caton , LANCASTER , Lancashire , LA2 9RA , United Kingdom
Situsted in North Yorkshire, Settle Friends Meeting House, constructed in 1678, was the first place of worship to be built in Settle. The current meeting is vibrant, and had been stretching the existing facilities for some time. In addition the need to go upstairs to the WC, the kitchen and the childrens room meant that changes needed to be made to facilitate disabled access to these areas. The final design allowed for an extension to the rear of the existing building dug into the existing graveyard. This strategy minimised the impact of the proposal upon the existing building whilst allowing full disability access into the building. The building was designed to tread lightly upon the earth. All the external stone was reclaimed from the original boundary wall. Unplastered bricks were used internally as they have less embodied energy within themselves than blockwork. Only timber was used in the joinerywork, and insulation levels well above the minimum required levels were used. The building is Grade2* listed and detailed conversations were held between English Heritage and SPAB before the planning application was made in order to ensure that they were happy with the proposals.
