Within a Conservation Area, New Build
Six new terrace houses set within the Dorset Conservation Area in Westminster and adjacent to the Grade 2 listed Chagford House. The planning restrictions imposed on the proposal required an innovative design approach to unlock the potential of the site. A penthouse philosophy for the living space was adopted raising it to the upper floors; this enabled the living space to be linked via a glass balustrade overlooking a double height void lit by a large raked skylight to the rear of the properties. External balconies and terraces complement the living spaces and primary bedrooms on all but one of the five floors enabling full height glazed doors to increase the levels of daylight to the rooms and introduce a variety of external spaces to the houses. The street elevation of the houses are individually expressed with double floor apertures punctured in a continuous rendered wall, these are modulated with vertical timber cladding and glazing creating a balcony to the first floor guest bedroom with an outlook up and down the street. The standing seam zinc roof follows the existing mansard roofline to the front of the properties and rakes round to the back minimising the impact to existing daylight to the properties at the rear.
