Within a Conservation Area
An original 19th Century workshop located in the Soho Conservation Area at one end of a row of terraces had become structural unstable due to years of neglect. The council were keen to see the building form retained however conceded the original structure was so severely compromised that demolition was appropriate. After extensive deliberation and consultation with English Heritage, Soho Society, Planning, and Heritage Consultants a replica scheme was proposed extending the building with an additional storey, new mansard roof and basement. The proposal provides two new studio apartments and a commercial unit on ground and first floor and a passenger lift connecting the floors. A daylight and sun light survey, and acoustic surveys were produced to demonstrate neighbouring residents were not significantly affected by the new proposals. The residential apartments are designed to achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes including the incorporation of a hot water system powered by photovoltaic cells.
