Oxford
Plans have been submitted for the phased redevelopment of the Clarendon Shopping Centre in Oxford. The scheme with three covered malls and a central atrium, houses retailers such as H&M and TK Maxx as anchors stores together with a wide range of other high street names. However, with the dwindling sales before the Coronavirus crisis affected the retailers further, MCa’s innovative Client; Lothbury Investment Management had decided to work with the Architects to plan the future for the prime City centre site. The scheme designed by MCa propose a very radical transformation of the existing buildings. The most ambitious feature is to remove a large part of the existing buildings and create a new city square for Oxford. In addition, the enclosed malls will be redeveloped into open streets. Both the new square and streets will be extensively and attractively landscaped. Arranged around the new square will be a wide range of uses such as research laboratories, high specification offices and student accommodation for Oxford university. Some of the accommodation will be delivered by partial reuse of existing buildings to which new buildings will be added. A constant at ground level will be a variety of cafes, shops and other leisure uses.
