“An extremely dense urban site within a conservation area, the project allowed a mix of social communities to continue in this rapidly gentrifying area. The four rear flats were transformed, from 1-person bedsits into bright and spacious family units. Manalo & White’s imaginative approach provided a sensitive solution to the extension of historic almshouses within a restricted budget, providing a modern standard of accommodation to a wider section of the community than had been possible before. The project was tightly constrained both by the budget available and the procurement timeframe set by its HCA funding. As both Architect and Construction Administrator, Manalo & White’s role was pivotal in managing this complex process.
