Grenadier House is a residential project in Horseferry Road. The new scheme will provide 40 self-contained residences for retirees designed to principles recommended in the government’s Housing our Ageing Population Plan for Implementation (HAPPI). The new homes are being built for local people who are down-sizing their properties when they reach retirement age but wish to stay within their own community. There are considerable benefits in providing good quality housing for older people, contributing to inclusive, safer, and sustainable communities. As well as the residential units the scheme will also provide a cafe, communal lounge, physical therapy area, visitors accommodation, residents parking and communal courtyard. Consideration has been given to the public realm and architecture of the building. Inspired by the surrounding buildings, Grenadier House is informed by local context and integrated into its surroundings. Additional landscaping will be provided on the roof and planters are provided on the resident’s balconies. Pleasant entrances and lobbies are provided, linking the attractive public realms with the residences. The units have been designed to support independent living and avoid an institutional feel. They are ‘care ready’ so that new emerging technologies can be incorporated, and are energy-efficient & well-insulated.
