Mackellar Schwerdt were appointed lead designers for this major ESCC project procured under IESE framework with Kier/Longley appointed as partnering contractor. The project, with major implications for the continuity of the learning experience, involved the decanting of the whole school into temporary accommodation. The design retains large elements of the existing accommodation with its complex multi level arrangement, and was carefully considered to ensure that the overall scheme did not result in a new and old distinction. Instead it seeks to ensure through the provision of a central atrium that all parts of the school are held together as one. This is not only achieved organisationally, in terms of plan form, with coherent inclusive learning communities but also visually through the external materials, with use of colored renders and different planes to bring down the scale of the existing block when viewed against the essentially three storey new build infills.
