The new Science Gallery at Guy’s Campus refurbishes the Grade II* listed Old Guy’s Hospital to create an innovative space where science and art collide. Combining the innovation of the Global Science Gallery Network with the unique history and research strengths of King’s College has resulted in a dynamic new space that brings together researchers, students, the local community and artists to stimulate fresh thinking and new approaches to science and art. The sensitive refurbishment of Boland House is a key redevelopment in the vibrant and rapidly changing London Bridge area, providing a major new addition to the cultural landscape of the city. Opposite the Shard, the new Science Gallery unlocks the potential of the college site with a large atrium lobby providing the ‘shop front’ that draws the public into the landscaped Georgian courtyard and the building itself. Galleries, a theatre, event and informal meeting spaces, a café and a shop form the main parts of the building while a new engraved acrylic lift shaft acts as a marker for the entrance, lit from behind it is a beacon for Science Gallery.
