A small village community seeks to rebuild their church after it was destroyed in a devastating earthquake in 2020. The exposed roof structure is a testament to the planar grid of a simple 10 by 10 metre building. The symbolism of these dimensions is quite intentional. Its external appearance does not want to shout too loudly about its size or presence, and it marks no cross on the outside. Yet on the inside, the church is anything but subdued. One enters through a lower space, in preparation. The main space is a love letter to the delight of natural oak and natural light. Oak is used as the primary construction material due its abundance in the region; its elasticity makes it ideal to resist any future earthquakes. Light is treated as an integral building ingredient, creating a sacral and tranquil space. These two elements, one of the earth and the other of the heavens, come together to form a graceful and harmonious architecture.
