Listed Building - Grade II
Lovelock Mitchell Architects , 3 Stanley Street , CHESTER , Cheshire , CH1 2LS , United Kingdom
lovelockmitchell were commissioned to provide full architectural services for the renovation of Castle Park House, a Grade 2 listed former Mansion House of neo-classical Victorian construction close to the centre of Frodsham. Dating back to about 1760, it was extensively reconstructed in the 1850s. It had suffered unsympathetic additions with many of the original fireplaces and joinery details disappearing. The proposal was that the remaining features left and representing the original design of the house were to be preserved - the existing decorative ceilings and friezes; the main staircase and landing; reinstatement of the centre light well, windows and timber reveals and external appearance. Unsympathetic adornments to the exterior were removed, e.g. steel fire escapes, electric cabling, steel railings to the windows and crudely painted stonework, original features such as the original veranda and canopies were replaced. The interior was extensively remodelled providing a practical and attractive working environment. The 1950s single storey brick extension, being out of sympathy with the main building, which housed the Council Chamber and Mayor's parlour, was demolished thus reinstating the original separation between buildings.
