New Build, Within a Conservation Area

Practice

London Atelier Ltd

Unit 7 , 160 Barlby Road , London , W10 6BS , United Kingdom

Located on a residential street near Richmond Park, this project replaces two modest dwellings with a pair of carefully composed family homes within a conservation area. The surrounding street is defined by brick-built houses with a consistent scale and rhythm, informing the proportions, massing, and material expression of the new buildings. Light organises the plan. Full-height openings to the front and rear draw daylight deep into the interiors, while carefully positioned rooflights introduce top light to central zones. The stepped rear massing allows sunlight to reach each level and strengthens the relationship between interior spaces and the garden. The material palette is restrained. Brick forms the primary envelope, articulated with cast stone bands and deep reveals. Timber composite windows introduce a softer grain, mediating between external solidity and internal atmosphere while maintaining durability and performance. All layouts are carefully considered, with bespoke joinery integrated throughout to organise storage, define thresholds, and support daily routines without disrupting spatial continuity. These elements are conceived as part of the architecture, reinforcing clarity within each space. High levels of insulation, airtightness, and integrated ventilation reduce energy demand and support long-term environmental performance.
