Casa della Torta forms part of a terrace of mid-19th century townhouses within the Westbourne Conservation Area. The four-storey house, including a lower ground floor, was constructed between 1850–1855, with a rear extension added in the 1950s. A fire at lower ground level damaged the kitchen and dining spaces, prompting a comprehensive refurbishment and reorganisation of the house. The project begins with an understanding of the family’s daily routines, recognising the kitchen as the primary space for cooking, working, and socialising. Within the narrow footprint, the strategy opens the floor plates to create a series of interconnected volumes arranged across staggered levels. Light is introduced from above and drawn through the section, using carefully positioned openings and vertical connections to reach the lower levels and define a calm internal atmosphere. The kitchen is positioned at an intermediate level, establishing a central point within the house. A glazed extension mediates between interior and garden, allowing direct access while bringing controlled daylight deep into the plan. From this level, visual connections extend to the living and dining spaces above and below, allowing movement and activity to overlap within a continuous spatial sequence. A restrained palette of plaster, timber, and stone establishes material continuity throughout. Bespoke joinery is integrated into the fabric of the building, forming a continuous element that begins as an external bench in the garden, extends into the dining room as seating and storage, and rises to frame the fireplace. This line anchors the interior and reinforces the relationship between inside and outside. The refurbishment includes upgrades to insulation and glazing, improving the overall performance of the building while working within the constraints of the existing structure.
