Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
Located within the Harley Street Conservation Area, close to Oxford Circus, this flagship salon for John Frieda occupies the ground and lower ground floors of a 1960s commercial building. All internal partitions were removed to establish a clear, continuous plan across two levels. A new entrance and staircase anchor the spatial sequence, organising movement and connecting the salon’s 21 workstations within a coherent layout. Light is used to structure the interior. Daylight enters at street level and is drawn deeper into the plan through glazed floor openings, establishing a visual link between levels. Artificial lighting is integrated to maintain an even, controlled atmosphere throughout the day. The material palette is restrained, combining metal, timber, and mineral surfaces. The existing industrial character is retained and refined through bespoke fixtures and furniture, while a new ground floor façade gives the shopfront a measured presence within its context. Custom joinery integrates storage, mirrors, and lighting into singular elements, supporting the daily routines of the salon. The result is a precise and calm working environment, defined by light, material, and spatial clarity.
