Richmond upon Thames

£250,000 to £499,999
Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
Hamberg House is a two-storey mid-terraced 1960s chalet property in Ham, Richmond. The project involved a full refurbishment and reorganisation of the interior, addressing a previously fragmented layout while reinforcing the relationship to its suburban context. Light becomes the primary organising element. The removal of internal partitions establishes a continuous ground floor, allowing daylight to move freely through the depth of the plan. At the centre, the staircase - once the darkest point of the house - is redefined through the introduction of rooflights and the removal of a section of the attic floor. This creates a triple-height volume that draws light down into the core, shaping both movement and orientation. Material interventions are precise and restrained. Existing structural elements are selectively exposed and reconfigured, increasing ceiling height while integrating linear lighting within the joists. Front and rear façades are opened with extensive glazing, extending views into layered greenery - from the immediate garden to the mature trees along the Thames - visually enlarging the interior. A carefully calibrated colour palette references the tonal character of the 1960s context, anchoring the project within its setting while establishing a clear, contemporary domestic environment.
