Alteration to existing property, Within a Conservation Area
Battersea Square Located within the tight urban grain of Battersea Square, this five-storey house occupies an irregular footprint shaped by its layered history. The remains of a former bakery persist in the basement, while its detached chimney stands nearby, marking the site’s earlier use. The project begins with this context. Rather than regularising the plan, the proposal retains and clarifies its geometry. A vertical “thick wall” is introduced as a continuous element rising through the building. This inhabited core accommodates bathrooms, storage, and services, consolidating function while releasing the perimeter. Light and spatial continuity are organised around this intervention. Floor plates are opened to allow views to extend across and between levels, giving legibility to the plan. A void between ground and basement draws daylight down and anchors the former bakery oven within the centre of the house, establishing a visual and spatial reference point. A rear extension at ground level follows the existing geometry, aligning the kitchen with the garden. A rooflight frames views towards the retained chimney, reconnecting the interior with its surroundings. Pigmented plaster is applied throughout. Its textured surface introduces tonal variation and depth, mediating between the existing fabric and the new intervention without erasing the building’s past.
