LOM has worked with Queen Elizabeth's Foundation for Disabled People (QEF) to create a comprehensive masterplan for the regeneration of their main campus in Surrey. The charity helps people with complex disabilities to achieve their goals in life, whether it’s learning everyday life skills, rebuilding a life affected by brain injury, or acquiring the skills to drive a specially adapted car. The charity’s campus has developed over a long period making use of existing buildings of disparate type and condition. The brief required a phased development to respond funding streams and enable the college to continue to operate with minimal disruption. A complex design brief and site context was compounded by its sensitive Green Belt location. The plans incorporate a state-of-the-art 24 bedroom Care and Rehabilitation Centre and specialist sports, administrative and support facilities within a coherent organisational arrangement. The campus will be largely funded through the disposal of land for residential development. With a large team and working with Welbeck Land and QEF, LOM helped secure planning permission on part of the site. Phase 1 consisting of the Care and Rehabilitation Centre, manufacturing facilities for MERU (a charity producing specialist equipment for disabled children) and retail support will be commencing on site shortly. Phase 2 will follow as the enabling development provides additional funding.
