New Build
A new a hotel and restaurant at Spanish City, Whitley Bay. The scheme for the 68 bed hotel and separate restaurant was designed by LMA architects for Robertson Developments, sits directly on the beach front adjacent to the historic Spanish City building with stunning uninterrupted views to the sea. Premier Inn have signed up to operate and manage the hotel. The building is clad predominantly in red facing brick to reflect the existing residential properties nearby and to allow the adjacent white rendered Spanish City to stand out and be the prominent building. The use of red brick, which was approved by the Historic Buildings Officer, in lieu of white render was a controversial for point for many local residents, attracting 50 objections from the public. The hotel and restaurant are located adjacent to the former funfair at Spanish City which is currently being refurbished by Robertson Construction and is part of the larger Whitley Bay Seafront Masterplan, a regeneration project along the stretch of coastline between St Mary’s Island and Cullercoats Bay. The current works in and around the Spanish City include a new car-park, re-alignment of the access road to provide better pedestrian links, creation of a new public open space as well as the refurbishment of the dome and building itself.
