The Methodist International Centre is the first ethical hotel and accommodation brand in the UK. It has won many awards for its approach to business and its approach to ethical hospitality. It now aims to re-imagine its business model to include more four-star accommodation, and better conference facilities. This transformation will also provide a new level of quality for its educational accommodation. The MIC’s strong ethics resonates directly with our own approach to architecture, and in particular sustainable hotel design. The ‘Wesley’, a working title for the project, will be an important early step in a revolution in hospitality. We have completed the masterplan and the first stage of renovation is on site. When the project is fully completed, the Wesley will have around 100 guestrooms of varying size and configuration. These will include penthouse suites, split level maisonette rooms, and rooms for visiting academics and students. All of the accommodation will be of 4 star quality. The creation of an impressive four story central atrium will provide banquet, restaurant and bar facilities to compliment the guestrooms and state of the art conference facilities. The atrium also provides more than architectural drama to the space. It will improve the environmental performance of the building by allowing valuable energy savings, collecting solar energy, and recycling heat to be used for heating water. Although the number of rooms will increase, water and energy consumption will fall dramatically as the efficiency of the building’s systems is improved. Roof gardens, and external landscaping will complete the transformation into the Wesley ethical hotel.
