Alteration to existing property
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust are currently undertaking a strategic review of its services and facilities. The Trust has undertaken a number of significant redevelopments on the site in the past ten years and further development was required in order to modernise the health services it delivers and ensures that it provides a fitting healthcare facility. This building is aligned to the Trust’s NHS Services strategic objective, which is to improve the patient experience, enable an increase in activity to be delivered and also enhance the Trust’s reputation as a world leading Comprehensive Cancer Centre. The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary site was subject to a programme of renovation and improvement of facilities. The new cancer centre & pathology Labs being the first. The development consists of the construction of a new oncology facility with consultation rooms, two general wards split between male & female and a combination of treatment chairs and beds depending on the patient needs, new office space for research and seminars, replace the existing facilities already on site. The previous Oncology rooms in the existing main hospital on the first floor were cramped, poorly equipped and the external view for the patients was very small and poorly maintained, the new facility is now located on the ground floor with its own dedicated main entrance so that patients can access the service with greater ease. The new building has successfully improved the physical environment in which people affected by cancer are treated, cared for and supported, they are offered a more sensitive, personalised and therapeutic environment, both as a source of support to them and their families and as a force for change in the local and national provision of cancer care facilities. The pathology laboratories have been relocated from the hospitals existing pathology services into a new purpose built facility closer to the accident and emergency unit, critical care, surgical services, diagnostic service, inpatient and day care services. The new pathology department continues to operate a 24 hour service, 7 days per week. The facility consists of haematology consultants rooms a new larger haematology & biochemistry laboratory fitted out with the latest Siemens centaur robots, coag analyzers and printers for both routine and specialized blood testing, receipt & dispatch prep area, blood bank, cold room, ward fridge & culture stores, along with new staff break areas and office accommodation.
