The Victoria Building was the first in the University of Liverpool’s estate, but it had slowly fallen out of use. The University wanted to bring the building back to life to provide space for the Educational Opportunities Department and to house their collections; opening the building up to the people of Liverpool and creating a new visitor attraction to coincide with the city’s status as the European Capital of Culture in 2008. The starting point for our refurbishment was to make the most of Waterhouse’s stunning interiors as the backdrop for the new facilities. Through careful refurbishment, they are now visible to the wider public for the first time in the building’s history. We also made series of sensitive interventions to make the building more accessible. Externally, the only ailing element was the impressive clock tower, which was fully restored to establish the Victoria Building as a Liverpool landmark once more.
