The Grade II listed former Market building for the town of Devonport is situated within the former Plymouth Dockyard. The building has an impressive symmetrical staircase leading to the inner mezzanine level. The walls of main building and the adjoining clock tower are constructed from limestone with both the trusses and supporting columns which form the roof being cast iron. The clock tower roof is completed with very intricate leadwork detailing completed at the centre with a gargoyle faced bulbous spirelet which supports the weather vane. Simon Crosbie and team undertook a full survey for Redrow Homes examining the structure to ascertain its current condition. This work included surveying, recording and checking each stone, with repairs or replacement meticulously scheduled. Full repairs were scheduled but until a viable use can be found a programme of holding repairs has been agreed and undertaken Careful conservation and cleaning of the tower leadwork was undertaken to ensure longevity without damage. Careful restoration and cleaning of the tower leadwork has taken place to ensure longevity without damage. In a separate commission a regeneration study funded by Devonport Regeneration Company sought to establish possible viable new uses in the same vein as other work at Devonport Guildhall and the nearby St Aubyn’s Church.
