A new altar, lectern and chair at St Aubyn’s Church and Library in Devonport complete the renaissance of the once redundant church. As part of the Devonport Regeneration community scheme, the church has been converted for use as a library, performance area and cafe while retaining an area for worship. Amanda Le Page was church architect for St Aubyn’s from 1988 until 2010 and was involved in the concept for the new use as well as the project until the formation of Le Page Architects. The main conversion project was completed a little after that time by GHK Architects based in London of which she was a director until June 2010. Le Page Architects were commissioned by the Parish, early in 2011, to design new church furniture. The pieces were designed by Charlotte Burden at Le Page and made by Christian O’Reilly a well-known furniture maker. The pieces reflect the Georgian proportions of the church and link with the shape of the window and barrel vaulted ceiling. It was important that the new furniture would reflect the new life of the building and be excellent examples of contemporary craftsmanship. There was a close collaboration during the detailed design and making process. For more information on the process see Christian O’Reilly’s blog.
