Kensington and Chelsea
£0.5m to £0.99M
Listed Building - Grade II
ASC The Handbag Factory , 3 Loughborough Street , London , SE11 5RB , United Kiingdom
Hill House International Junior School appointed Le Lay Architects to adapt the derelict, Grade II listed, Regency building for new sport, music, art and IT facilities. The dark interior has been sensitively redecorated to show off the elegant, coved ceiling structure and the building's distinctive character while providing an imposing backdrop for assemblies and concerts. Through extensive negotiation with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea planning and careful management of the construction process, the school started classes in under twelve months from the start of the project. The building's history reflects the changing fashions for entertainment and worship in Chelsea since the 1830's and make it an important local landmark. The restoration has now protected the building for the long term while giving Hill House a site that both reflects and caters for its aspirations.
