New Build
1 High Bungay Road , Loddon , Norwich , Norfolk , NR14 6JT , United Kingdom
The aim of the project was to create a contemporary extension to the existing converted farm buildings. The objective was also to create a sheltered environment to the courtyard area formed by the building. As such, a mono-pitch design was sought to give high, airy spaces to the new extension. These mirrored the open roof void areas to the existing extension which gave the existing property a characterful open plan feel. The design of the new extension contrasts strongly with that of the existing with a vertical Cedar boarded form with dark brown aluminium windows with large elements of full height glazing. Internally the design incorporates ply flooring throughout with a high standard of finish and shadow gap details. The building has been constructed to very high thermal standards using a 200mm deep timber frame constructed on site with shredded newspaper insulation. The mono-pitched roof is constructed in a similar way also with a high thermal performance level. The windows are thermally broken aluminium and have not only a very long life span but also can be very efficiently recycled if required. The roof is the Eternit Profiled roofing panel blending in with the agricultural location generally. The Cedar cladding externally picks up on the existing detail of the current buildings. The timber frame construction has a lower embodied carbon energy. The heating is via an underfloor heating system connected to the existing boiler. The building sits well in its surroundings and has enhanced the existing house and enabled it to become a more successful house.
