Church House is a Grade 2 listed building. The present Church House was designed in 1933 by Sir Herbert Baker and completed in 1939 on the eve of World War 2. Today the House continues to serve as the administrative centre and Parliament for the Church of England. Its very location, a few hundred yards from the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, enables this Building to operate in tandem with Government affairs to procure not only legislation for the Church of England, but also function as the nerve centre for all aspects of the Church today including finance, property, welfare and maintenance of all the C of E assets. Church House consists of a 'shallow depth' framed structure rising between 4 and 6 floors, clad in brickwork with a knapped flint base, the offices and rooms alike form a perimeter around a large grand circular hall situated at first floor level with its distinctive roof light and crowned large copper domed roof, this ?Assembly Hall? justifies its position at the epicentre of the building. After completing the South-side Office refurbishment project of similar size to the North-side below (in 2000), Lawray Architects were again appointed in 2006 to refurbish the existing North offices in its entirety, with the intention to space plan and accommodate the relocation of the Church Commissioners who were exiting 1 Millbank. Embodied within this brief was the need for upgrading/replacement of the many roofs, The full strip out and reinstatement of open plan offices with the latest IT systems, Installation and accommodation of new M+E plant with respective enclosures, the upgrade of the Conference Centre facilities and introduction of state of the art AV equipment, improved catering facilities and modifications to the main circular Assembly Hall, this section of the work in itself demanded an attentive approach to the existing decorative features, ornate ceilings and extensive timber panelling. Over the course of the project Lawray worked closely with the team to deliver a scheme, which not only complimented the Church?s ambitions for internal restructure, but also injected new life into the Conference Centre facilities with upgrades that enable it to overcome the demands of the 21st Century Corporate market. Martin Fox, Managing Director and Senior Design Architect at London office is still retained as Consultant Architect for the Corporation of Church House.
